Goodbye to Happy, a four-legged park volunteer who lived up to his name until the end.Illustration for National Parks Magazine Winter 2018 Issue.
This assignment was a commission for an inspiring canine park volunteer named Happy. Happy was known for bringing comfort to people in hospitals, senior care centers, and Flight 93 National Memorial.
Recession and depression described much of the country in 2010. Jobs were limited for many, and they were especially hard to find for artists. Rather than submit entirely to the riptide of the times, my second journal provided the creative outlet I needed to stay sharp.
This photo essay was published on a blog called “Tales of Wander” by a clothing and gear company called HAVAIII Co. Venturing out to Rainier National Park meant hopping on a 6-hour flight from New York, and then embarking on a 5-hour round trip drive from Tacoma. This may seem a bit much for a day-hike, but to me, it was entirely worth it.
